Temperature dependent intercalation of molten 1-hexadecanol into Brodie graphite oxide

Intercalation of very long molecules into the structure multi-layered graphene oxide (GO) was studied using example 1-hexadecanol (C16), an alcohol molecule with 16 carbon atoms. Brodie graphite (BGO) immersed in excess liquid C16 just above melting point shows expansion c-unit cell parameter from ∼6 Å to ∼48.76 forming a two densely packed layers perpendicular orientation relative GO planes (α-phase). Heating BGO-C16 α-phase melt results reversible phase transition β-phase at 336–342K. The much smaller unit 29.83 (363K). Analysis data obtained vacuum-driven evaporation provides evidence for consisting five parallel plane orientation. Therefore, α-to corresponds change and decrease amount intercalated solvent. Cooling absence is found result formation γ-phase inter-layer distance ∼26.5 corresponding one layer perpendicularly planes. Structures were identified samples rather small initial loading C16. Surprisingly rich variety structures revealed system opportunities create materials precisely controlled distance.
